Why We Run Multiple Fundraisers

Some wonder why we host several fundraisers each year. The answer is urgency: children with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome are losing vision every day. Running multiple campaigns helps us raise funds quickly, reach more people, and keep hope alive for sight-saving research.

Why We Run Multiple Fundraisers

At A Race Against Blindness, one of the most common questions we receive is: “Why do you have so many fundraisers running at once?” It’s a fair question, and we want to answer it openly.

The Urgency of Time

Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), the rare disease that affects our son and many others in the community, causes progressive vision loss. Children with BBS and related conditions lose retinal cells every single day, often reaching blindness in their teens.

The gene therapy we’re working so hard to fund only works if there is vision left to preserve. That’s why the clock is ticking—and why we fundraise with urgency.

Why Multiple Fundraisers

Instead of holding one fundraiser per year, we run multiple campaigns throughout the year. Here’s why:

  • Faster progress: Each fundraiser helps us raise the resources needed to advance research toward clinical trials without waiting months in between.

  • Broader reach: Different campaigns appeal to different people. Some supporters are excited about overland vehicles, others about dream vans, and others about unique experiences. Every campaign is another chance to introduce new people to our mission.

  • Momentum matters: Frequent campaigns keep our cause visible, raising awareness not just for our nonprofit but also for the rare disease and vision loss communities as a whole.

Each fundraiser is independent, with its own official rules, closing date, and winner chosen by a licensed third-party administrator. All sweepstakes are registered and bonded. Winners are announced live, and we post their names publicly so everyone can share in the excitement.

Our Mission Comes First

While the prizes draw attention, the heart of every fundraiser is the same: to fund sight-saving research and give children with BBS a fighting chance to keep their vision. We aren’t running “contests” to enrich ourselves—we’re running fundraisers with urgency because families like ours can’t afford to wait.

We’re committed to transparency, and you can always verify our nonprofit status, review our annual reports, and see our winners page for yourself.

Together, these campaigns are more than giveaways—they’re lifelines to research, awareness, and hope.
