Every movement for change begins with someone willing to take the first step. For A Race Against Blindness, that person was Dr. Steve Johnston — physician, father, and the donor of the very first vehicle that launched our fundraiser sweepstakes model.
The Founder-Donor Who Started It All
When A Race Against Blindness was only an idea, Steve made a pivotal donation: his own brand new, epic adventure van, custom build by 27North. That single gift became the prize for our very first sweepstakes fundraiser. Without it, our organization may have never gotten off the ground. That act of faith — and of generosity — opened the door for every campaign, every dollar raised, and every milestone we’ve achieved since.
Why He Leads
Steve is not just a co-founder — he is also the father of a child with Retinitis Pigmentosa caused by Bardet-Biedl Syndrome. When his son received the devastating diagnosis that he would lose his vision, Steve’s mission became clear: to fight for research, treatments, and hope for families like his.
What Sets Him Apart
Steve brings more than passion to the table. As an MD & MBA, he combines medical expertise with deep business and leadership experience. Over the course of his career, he has built companies, led teams, and solved complex challenges. Those same skills now fuel the success and sustainability of A Race Against Blindness.
Dedication Without Personal Gain
Despite his critical role, Steve takes no salary from the nonprofit. He continues to work full-time as a radiologist — typically working night shifts so that he can devote his days to leading and growing A Race Against Blindness. His commitment is not about personal gain but about ensuring that every resource possible goes toward research, awareness, and impact.
A Founder with a Father’s Heart
What makes Steve uniquely qualified to lead this mission isn’t just his professional background — it’s his personal one. As a father, he knows firsthand the urgency of finding treatments and cures. As a leader, he has the skills to turn that urgency into action.
A Race Against Blindness was born from a father’s love and a family’s determination. And thanks to Steve’s ongoing leadership, it continues to grow into a movement of hope for the Bardet-Biedl Syndrome community and beyond.
