New Partnership Aims to Accelerate Nanoparticle Therapy for Inherited Retinal Diseases

For individuals and families navigating the challenges of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs), news of advancements in potential treatments offers significant hope. A recent partnership between GBI Biomanufacturing and NanoRetinal, announced on September 16, 2025, marks a promising step forward in the development of a novel nanoparticle-based therapy designed to restore and preserve vision for those affected by these conditions.

This collaboration focuses on advancing NanoRetinal's proprietary pipeline, NAR-001, which is described as a first-in-class therapeutic. IRDs, including conditions like retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease, are characterized by genetic mutations that lead to the progressive degeneration and destruction of the retina. NAR-001 is engineered to enhance the supply, photostability, and durability of visual pigment within the eye.

GBI Biomanufacturing, a US-based contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), will provide its expertise in mammalian cell culture lines and end-to-end GMP-compliant processes to aid NanoRetinal in developing NAR-001. The partners anticipate that GBI's manufacturing resources will help expedite NAR-001's progression to clinical trials.

John Cullity, CEO of NanoRetinal, expressed confidence in GBI's ability to meet the necessary regulatory standards for product manufacturing. Karl Pinto, CEO of GBI, stated that his company is
