According to Alex Katz, MD, medical geneticist and Chief Medical Officer of TeleRare Health, while significant breakthroughs have occurred in rare disease management, approved treatments are available for only a small fraction of these diseases, and access to care remains a problem. TeleRare Health seeks to address this by offering services such as genetic testing, care coordination, referrals, information on available treatments, and details about clinical trials. The clinic also plans to provide symptom management through video visits, focusing on detecting and preventing potential escalations.

For patients and families affected by IRDs, this virtual model could mean overcoming barriers such as long travel times and limited access to specialists. The clinic emphasizes leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in genomics to continuously monitor for new, clinically actionable genetic variant information. TeleRare Health also aims to reduce the time it takes to receive a diagnosis and to initiate treatment.

While TeleRare Health currently operates on a cash-pay basis, with initial consultations at $400 and follow-up visits at $250, they also offer an annual subscription for unlimited visits at $4,000. This new virtual clinic represents a step forward in making specialized rare disease care more accessible, potentially easing the burden on patients and their families seeking expert guidance and support.
