UCL Announces Launch of Gene Therapy Company Athena Vision

For the inherited retinal disease (IRD) community, academic advancements moving toward practical clinical application represent an important step forward. Developments in biotechnology help bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and potential treatments for vision-losing conditions.

According to UCL, UCL Business PLC announced the formation of Athena Vision Limited on November 24, 2015. Athena Vision is a biopharmaceutical company created to focus on the development of gene therapies targeting a range of eye diseases that cause blindness.

The new company emerged from research conducted by Professor Robin Ali, Head of the Department of Genetics at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and a leader in cell and gene therapy for the eye. Alongside its launch, Athena Vision entered into a global partnership with MeiraGTx Limited to develop and commercialize its ocular gene therapy programs. The initiative has also been supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC) through its Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme.

For patients and families affected by rare blinding conditions, corporate partnerships and spin-out companies provide a structured pathway for translating early-stage academic research into advanced therapeutics.

Athena Vision plans to advance its pipeline of novel therapeutics based on the foundational research established at UCL.
