Sailing Against Time: Oban Teen Pursues Global Yacht Race Before Vision Loss
For members of the inherited retinal disease (IRD) community, navigating life with a degenerative eye condition often means racing against an unpredictable clock. Stories of personal determination resonate deeply within our network, highlighting both the challenges of progressive vision loss and the profound desire to live life to the fullest. According to West Coast Today, an 18-year-old apprentice mechanical engineer from Oban is currently sharing his own extraordinary journey as he aims to join the prestigious Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
Facing Retinitis Pigmentosa 38
Cameron James Harris was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa 38 in October 2025, after being referred to specialists during a routine eye appointment at age 15. According to the report, the degenerative condition gradually destroys eyesight over time, and currently has no cure, no clear timeline, and no way of knowing how long his vision will last.
Because of his vision complications, Cameron wears specialist tinted glasses and faces daily impacts on his routine. He was also informed that he will never be able to hold a driver's license—news he described to West Coast Today as "really hard" to hear at age 17—and his condition will likely force him to change his career path.
Finding Freedom on the Water
In search of independence and a sense of calm away from driving, Cameron turned to sailing. Having completed a "Learn to Sail" course through Oban High School five years ago, he actively sails dinghies and keelboats, serves on the Oban Sailing Club committee, and crews locally.
His passion was further fueled when the Clipper Race visited Oban, giving him a firsthand look at the racing yachts. Now, he hopes to participate in the global endurance race, viewing the ocean as a true equalizer that demands teamwork and mutual trust.
What This Means for Patients and Families
For families navigating rare eye diseases, Cameron's story underscores the emotional reality of adapting to progressive conditions like retinitis pigmentosa. While losing the ability to drive or pursue certain milestones presents heavy hurdles, the pursuit of alternative passions highlights resilience and the vital role of community support networks.
Looking Ahead
As discussions continue regarding future Clipper Race routes and potential stopovers in Oban, Cameron continues to sail locally with the Oban Sailing Club while sharing his story to encourage community support for his ambitions.
